Gabby woke up one morning on a bright, sunny day. Today was her first day on the job as an epidemiologist. Epidemiologists study the patterns, spread, causes, and effects of diseases and health issues. Without these types of scientists, disease would
increase rapidly. She hopped
out of bed and began to get
ready for her big day.
Gabby arrived at work without any trouble. She organized her desk area and met her new co workers. Finally, she took a seat when all of a sudden, she saw her boss, James, rushing towards her. He told her that a new disease had spread throughout the north east coast called haugyingidus, however, they don't know what the symptoms are. "You need to report to the laboratory immediately to help us investigate." Gabby was a little bit startled, but she was ready. Her boss led her to the lab room where the haugyingidus was being held. They used their senses to try and figure out how severe the illness was.
After the observation, they had a quick meeting. They talked about the senses (smell, vision, and touch) that they used for their observation. They decided that in a couple hours they would test haugyingidus on a couple of test rats. There main question was what are the symptoms that happen when the rats are exposed to this disease.
When they inject the rats, they will become infected
The scientists decided that they needed to convene a meeting for all the epidemiologists. They thought that it was a branch of the flu virus, but they needed someone elses view point just to be sure.
Later that night, the scientists had a meeting with the other epidemiologists throughout America. They decided to conduct the same experiment and would get back to us if they had the same theory and results.
After a long, first day at work, Gabby could finally relax. She had her dinner, brushed her teeth, and had a long, nice, deep sleep.
A week after her first day on the job, the rats had all recovered. The rats that received the same treatment used to get rid of the typical flu virus took about 3 days, and the rats that received little treatment took about a week. James was very impressed with her performance in a crisis, so he had already promoted her. The other scientists that came to communicate results had the same results that Gabby and her co workers had. Haugyingidus was just another branch of the flu virus.
After the meeting, Gabby and her associates went to test on the rats. They took 30 to test, and after they injected them with syringes, they put them in a cage all by themselves. The epidemiologists concluded that in a couple hours, they would see how the lab rats were doing.
When they injected the rats, they became cold and
vomited
A few hours later, Gabby went to check on the rats. 10% out of the 30 rats physically seemed normal, but the other 90% looked cold, were huddled by themselves in the corner of their cage, and a couple had vomited in their enclosure. Since she was still unsure what was causing this sickness, Gabby went back to her office to analyze the results.
She took a closer look at rats' saliva and compared the infected/normal rats DNA. She noticed that in the infected rats DNA, there was green bacteria that looked similar to the bacteria in the flu. She went to tell James and the other associates, who had also come up with the same results,
