After getting married in 1620, Velázquez moved to Madrid. Here he began painting his own works.
In this time period, the kings, (Phillip IV), court painter died. Thanks to Velázquez's father-in-law, he got a chance to sketch an image of Phillip IV, to prove his worth. The king was so impressed, he got the job.
Las Meninas is considered to be Velázquez's magnum opus, or masterpeice. The subject is open to interpretation, but is a great work of art nonetheless.
His final years were sudden. He painted until the end and died of fever in 1660.
