Drugs in the 1960's

  • Hippies used drugs like cannabis and LSD, and often listened to psychedelic rock while taking them
  • Psychedelic rock artists include The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix
  • They tended to stay away from drugs like heroine and amphetamines, because they were harmful and addictive.

The Summer of Love

The Summer of love was gathering of hippies to celebrate hippie culture. 3,000 hippies were expected to come; instead, 30,000 hippies came. LSD was slipped into turkey sandwiches, and drugged hippies

danced and sang.

After the celebration,

hippies gained a new

nickname: The Flower

People

The Origin of the Peace Sign

Designed in 1958, it was originally designed by Gerard Holtom for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). The lines in the middle were an N and a D for Nuclear Disarmament. It then became a national symbol for peace in general.

What are hippies, and what did they protest?

  • Hippies, or the Counter-Culture Movement, were a youth movement that started in the U.S. around the early 1960's.
  • Hippies date back to 1810's Oktoberfest, a festival celebrating the unification of Germany
  • Hippies rejected middle class values, opposed nuclear weapons, and altogether, hated the Vietnam War. These were only a few things they protested

Death of the Hippie

Work Ethics/Clothing

  • Hippies often didn't work, and many hated major companies, universities, and the government.
  • Many farmed together, living off of their own crops.
  • Hippies wore colorful clothing (ragged clothes, tie-dye, beads, jewelry) to signify peace, free love, and equality.

Hippies started losing publicity in 1967, and finally ended with Woodstock, a large festival that was one of their biggest protests in their movement. It lasted for three days, and rained, which caused mud that gave the crowd a second wind. Woodstock included several psychedelic rock artists, and even the Beatles almost preformed.
