"Dial-up Internet access is a form of Internet access that uses the facilities of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to establish a dialed connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) via telephone lines." (wikipedia.org)
A dial-up connection is a connection which uses pre-existing public telephone lines to connect to the an Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is a slower connection than broadband, therefore websites don't perform as well, and requires you to manually connect to it on your computer. As it uses telephone lines, you can't connect to it whilst someone is on the phone, which can be an inconvenience.
Latest versions of Browser are faster and provide you with more buttons on your toolbar which makes your browsing experience easier and more efficient as websites perform at their best. Some browsers work better on different computers depending on broadband speed. Examples of recent browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer.
"The term broadband refers to the wide bandwidth characteristics of a transmission medium and its ability to transport multiple signals and traffic types simultaneously." (Wikipedia.org)
Broadband is high-speed internet access which uses fiberoptic cables to ensure it is the highest speed connection. It can transport multiple signals simultaneously which means that, unlike dial-up, you can use several internet devices at the same time. It's speed is 1mbps or higher. This means that whilst browsing the internet, pages should load much faster and perform better.
"In computer science, a cache is a component that transparently stores data so that future requests for that data can be served faster." (wikipedia.org)
A cache is something on your computer which remembers data which you load on the internet. Therefore, if you want to visit that webpage again in the future, the page will load faster, improving your the webpage's performance.
"Mobile broadband is the marketing term for wireless Internet access through a portable modem, mobile phone, USB wireless modem, or other mobile devices."
(wikipedia.org)
Mobile broadband gives users the ability to access the internet through a portable device, such as a mobile phone. It detects connections from wherever you are and connects to them so that you can access the internet on your device. As it uses mobile memory and can't process as much information, pages load slower than if you were to access them on a computer, therefore large webpages may not perform as well, unless they have a mobile version of their site.
Older versions of browser include SlimBrowser, SeaMonkey and Netscape. These browsers are slower than the latest versions and contain less interactive features on the toolbar. Also some older browsers don't support highly interactive websites, which could be a problem for users as websites don't perform as well.
"Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. A random-access device allows stored data to be accessed in very nearly the same amount of time for any storage location, so data can be accessed quickly in any random order." (wikipedia.org)
RAM is a type of data storage which allows data to be accessed in whenever, in any order. How fast your internet loads, depends on how much data memory you have, because if you have little memory, it will cause your computer to slow down, so webpages will take longer to load and not perform as well. This especially happens on more interactive websites as they use more memory.
"A local area network that uses high frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data over distances of a few hundred feet" (wordnetweb.princeton.edu)
Wi-Fi is a wireless signal sent out by a router which provides local devices with internet connection. It can be password protected, or open for anyone within a certain range to use. Depending on your broadband speed and quality of router, your internet speed can be very fast, therefore websites perform well.
Scripts for a website contain codes which make the websites appear how it does. Every animation, picture, video etc. has a script. If a webpage has too many scripts it will take longer and longer to load and could crash. This effects the website performance because it eventually becomes so slow that people will avoid that website.
"A bandwidth limit is how fast or how much data a computer connection be downloaded per second, or transferred from the Internet to the computer" (www.wisegeek.com)
When someone visits a website, the content they download adds to the amount of data overall being downloaded. Having a bandwidth limit means that only so much data can be downloaded at a time. If too many people visit a website, it could crash or become very slow. This affects website performance as they load very slowly and sometimes don't work.
Server storage space is the amount of memory you have on your server. If you have too much data on your server, your internet will start to slow down which will effect the performance of websites as they will become slow.
Images- On websites, images should be saved as Bitmap or Vector files. Photos made of pixels with large file sizes are saved as Bitmap files and smaller images such as clip art or cartoon images are saved as Vector files.
Sounds- On the internet, sounds are uploaded as WAV or MP3 files. WAV files are usually shorter but aren't compressed, therefore can take up more memory, resulting in poor website performance. MP3 files are longer but as they are compressed they take up less memory and therefore load faster. However, although the file size differs, the quality of sound is consistent.
ActiveX- This describes programs used for browsing the internet which improve how the website performs as it allows more interactive features. Certain websites need ActiveX in order to function properly if there are many interactive features on the website.
Databases- When you enter details into a webpage, they are sent to a database which they are linked to. This means that the website relies on the database to be working, otherwise there will be a rely on the webpage. Also databases could cause data protection problems because personal information is being sent somewhere else. With such a large amount of data, this also causes the webpage to slow down.
Animations- Animations are basically pictures which move. They take up more memory than an image, but much less than a video as they are often silent and only last a few seconds. Animations can be saved as GIFs, WebP, FLA etc. If animations are long, they take up more memory and therefore can take a while to load.
AJAX- AJAX is a term used to describe a group of programs which help development. Websites which use AJAX require users to have Javascript enabled, which can slow down your computer, but without it the webpage wouldn't display properly
