The moon revolves around the earth in a 29 1/9 day period = about a month

This is know as the SYNODIC MONTH this however is only the apparent period for the phases of the moon

The moon actually only takes 27 1/3 days to travel around the earth know as the SIDEREAL MONTH

On a side-note

The time it takes the moon to revolve around its own axis is equal to a sidereal month

So.. We are always seeing the same lunar hemisphere

Kid fact: The dark side of the moon is -173'C (-280'F) while the Illuminated side is a toasty 127'C (261'F)

The next visible eclipse in the U.S. will be Agust 21, 2017

The Moon

How they all move

Earth

Earth takes approximately 24 hours = 1 day to rotate around it's axis

Controlling night and day

Earth takes 365 days = 1 year to revolve around the sun

Eclipses

Two kinds of eclipses

Total Eclipses lasts for only 7 minutes

Complete Shadow

Polar regions see a lot of partial eclipses because they are at the very edge of the penumbra when the moons shadow misses the earth

SUN LIGHT

Phases of the Moon

A little bit of light

Lunar Eclipse: Where the earth is directly between the sun and the moon casting a shadow on the moon

Solar Eclipse: when the moon is directly in line with the sun and the earth casting a shadow on the earth

The moon looks red because the earth atmosphere bends the sunlight transmiting long-wavelengths of light that are red

Lasts up to four hours

Visible to any one on that side of the earth

  • We have phases because of the motion of the moon and sunlight
  • Half the moon is always illuminated even though thats not how we see it
  • The phases are our perspective of the moon here on earth

Quiz Questions

  • The moon is visible during the day when it is not directly across from the sun

What is a sidereal month?

Why do we have moon phases?

Why dose the moon turn red during a lunar eclipse?

  • It only not rises and sets with the sun when it is a full moon
