What is "Onychophyma"?
Also known Koilonychia or spoon nail a condition where the nail bed is flat or concave and dips or waves are visible on the nail, the dips and waves you see are in the nail bed.
Severe cases of spoon nail shows nails with a spoon like indentation in the center of the nail deep enough to hold a few drops of water.
Causes of Onychophyma
Hereditary
Systematic problems
This rarely occurs but diseases such as Cancer can cause this disease to form, it might also form if the patient has bad lungs/ heart.
If you get Onychophyma because it is hereditary multiple nails will be effected with a concave dip. the indent will grow out, but the new nail will still have the same indent.
Just habits
picking, biting,or rubbing your nails might seem like just a "bad habit" but the severe trauma from doing so is also another cause of Onychophyma.
Treatment/ Cures
A doctor will evaluate the nail and get the patient's medical history so they can determine the cause of the disorder.
The doctor may recommend an iron supplement our she might order more tests to determine if there is a deeper cause.
Treatment can also include a emollient that will soften the nail and the surrounding skin to prevent splitting and cracking
