HISTORY

BACKGROUND

BATTLE

The battle of Chippawa was the longest and bloodiest military operation of the war of 1812. The battle took place on the fields of Samuel street's farm near the banks of Niagara river.

Americans hoped for Jacob Brown to be able to cross the Niagara, sweep west along the southern shore of lake Ontario and then the western end of the lake to seize york the capital of upper Canada. This was delayed and he was ordered to cross Niagara river to seize fort Erie at the southern end of the river, and advance north to Chippawa, possibly even towards fort George and fort Niagara.

Brown made the first move, ordering 500 Pennsylvanian force to clear out some wood. They ran into Riall's force crossing the Chippawa. Riall ordered an attack with the king's regiment on the right and royal Scots and the 100th regiment in the center. American troops were now capable of effective musketry. The fight started early in the morning and lasted until nearly 6 o'clock in the evening.
