The Constitution
The War
After years of debate, trial, and error, 55 delegates from every state but Rhode Island meet in Philadelphia. Their challenge: to create a fair government that is elected by the people and which will protect people's rights that they've just spent eight years fighting for. What they come up with is the Constitution
The Challenges Ahead

While Spain and Britain still technically claimed these areas, Jefferson knew that if Americans were the only ones living there then they would, in fact, own the land.
All he needed was for someone to go and find a way to get there. . .
- Trade with the west coast required travel all the way around South America.
- President Thomas Jefferson bought a huge chunk of land from France (Louisiana Purchase) and needed someone to explore it and find a trade route to the Pacific
Supreme Court - nominated by president and approved by congress
