Building A New Nation

The Constitution

The War

After years of debate, trial, and error, 55 delegates from every state but Rhode Island meet in Philadelphia. Their challenge: to create a fair government that is elected by the people and which will protect people's rights that they've just spent eight years fighting for. What they come up with is the Constitution

The Challenges Ahead

  • Meddling European powers such as Britain, France, and Spain still claim large parts of North America.
  • France & England steal U.S. ships & kidnap sailors

War of 1812

President - elected by the people

The Executive Branch

After the Battle of Bunker Hill, the patriot army, led by George Washington, fights for eight years before finally winning the war.

King George wants to continue fighting, but the English parliament has had enough and forces him to surrender.

  • The U.S. fights to take control of Canada away from Britain and Florida away from Spain
  • Doesn't get either, but does show the world that they can't just steal our ships.
  • U.S. signs treaty with Britain again in Paris (Dec. 1814)

Signs or vetoes laws passed by congress

Congress - elected by the people

Louisiana Purchase

The Legislative Branch

Makes laws by debating & voting on them

While Spain and Britain still technically claimed these areas, Jefferson knew that if Americans were the only ones living there then they would, in fact, own the land.

All he needed was for someone to go and find a way to get there. . .

  • Trade with the west coast required travel all the way around South America.
  • President Thomas Jefferson bought a huge chunk of land from France (Louisiana Purchase) and needed someone to explore it and find a trade route to the Pacific

Supreme Court - nominated by president and approved by congress

The Judicial Branch

Decides if laws are constitutional (agree with constitution)

&

For example:

1. Freedom of religion

2. Right to bear arms

3. People shouldn't have to quarter soldiers
