Who is Randolph Caldecott and why is there an award named for him?

In 1938, the Association for Library Service to Children created an award for the year’s

most distinguished children’s book

illustrated by an American artist.

They named it after Randolph Caldecott because he was believed to be the father of the picture book for children.
