Bird bones are hollow

Strong bones have evolved to help their internal organs

They have less bones than most mammals and reptiles.

Birds have a keel shaped sternum which is where the flight muscles attach to the body

The bones of a bird are very heavy but have air pockets that make the bones light.

They have less bones because some of the bones fuse together making the skeleton rigid.

Body Shape

As birds start flying they use their strong leg muscles to jump into the air then the birds quickly flap their wings and fly away.

A bird's body has a head trunk, wings, legs, and a tail. They have a boat shaped body to help them float easily.

Did you know a birds chest muscles are stronger than a humans'?

Wing Structure

A bird's wing is rounded at the top which creates low-air pressure. Narrow wings are very good for gliding. Curved wings are good for gliding far distances. Rounded wings are good for quick turns. When a bird flies, its feathers get wierd and when it stops, the birds uses its beak to fix them.

TaiL

Birds tip their tail to help it steer.

When birds spread their tail feathers they put on the brakes. The tail helps birds with lift, speed, balance, and also direction. A bird's tail has a tailbone, flight feathers, and a layer of covering feathers near the base. The feathers are arranged in overlapping pairs.

Propulsion (PUSH)

Some birds use cliffs to fly off.

Swans, Loons, and some Ducks run across the

water before they fly. (Take off)

When a bird beats its wings, the feathers push against the air. This lets the bird move forward.

other....Facts...

Flying helps birds move faster, get food from different places, escape from enemies, and migrate. GWs have very resilient head/neck muscles so that they can peck into trees. They also have long pointy beaks and long sticky tongues with a bristle-like tip.

How to identify a Gila Woodpecker.

1. Feminine and masculine gilas have a brown head.

2. They have a black/white striped back.

3. Their white wing patches are visible when they fly.

4. Masculine adults have red feathers on their heads.

Usual places to find GWs

You can find this woodpecker in the southeast of California, the southwest of Nevada, the southwest New Mexico and more.
