2. Write the following sentence on the top of your notes (in the space next to your name):
The little crab, which was scurrying near the water, was the only visible sign of life.
Circle the relative pronoun and underline the clause that it modifies.
• A character says the opposite of what he or she really means.
• Example: after the enemy operative gives up his companion, the one betrayed says, “I’m glad I trusted you.”
• The reader knows something a character does not.
• During the whole story, readers know that the operative is actually a long-lost brother of the one he betrays- but neither of the characters are aware of this.
• An event directly contradicts strong expectations.
• Example: in a story in which two companions hide from an enemy, one of the two turns out to be an enemy operative.
