Poland

1. The Polish cuisine in the Middle Ages was based on dishes made of agricultural produce (millet, rye, wheat), meats of wild and farm animals and fruits, herbs and local spices. It was known above all from abundant salt using and permanent presence of groats.

2. Potatos, pork, chicken, cabbage, pickles/cucumbers, rice, onions, beets, and various other vegetables.

3. Pierogi, Kielbasa, Barszcz, zurek, sausage, sourkraut, Golabki, Krokiety, miseria, Pork cutlets with mashed potatoes, blintzes, paczki, .

4. Many grandmothers would take full days to make their own homemade pierogi for the family (not as common anymore). These dishes are common at any big holiday like Christmas and Easter except.

5. Food culture affected me a lot because a lot American food seems foreign to me because I grew up eating Polish style foods everyday. I’ve learned to love both American and Polish food by being Polish-American. Its great to have an expanding palette from various countries.

American Food Culture

Today...

Food culture refers to the practices, attitudes, and beliefs as well as the networks and institutions surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of food.

This event will discuss the origins and importance of food culture around the world and answer these essential questions.

1. What is the history of food in your country?

2. What are the ingredients most commonly used in the area?

3. What are the main and familiar dishes from this country?

4. What traditions are associated with certain food?

5. How does food culture impact your life here?

American food practices stem from a diverse population of immigrants and a plethora of food and access.

Thailand

Jamaica

1. Thailand’s economy is built on farming, primarily rice and fish. Historically, food has played a major role in the ways tradition is passed down.

2. Rice and fish (+ byproducts like fish sauce) because this is what was mainly abundant in Thailand for centuries. Common ingredients include papaya, coconut, ginger, tamarind and lemongrass. Thai cuisine aims to balance sweet, salty, spicy, sour and savory in all dishes.

3. Pad Thai, Som Tum, Tom Yum, Pad See Ew, Larb Gai, and Khao Nom.

4. Thailand is known for its 24hr availability to delicious street foods. Thai meals often last anywhere between 2-5 hours. Basically, Thai people are always eating.

5. In America there is an abundance of quasi-Thai cuisine. My mother is a Thai refugee and food was a big part of her staying connected to her roots. At the temple the offering of food plays a major role in Buddhist tradition. Overall, food is a central part of Thai culture.

1. Influenced by British, Spanish, Chinese, Indian, African and Irish foods

2.

3. Beef patties, Jerk Chicken, Curry Goat, Rice and Peas, Escovitch Fish, and Ackee and Saltfish

4. Although it is eaten for many occasions, Jamaican Fruit Cake is most commonly associated with Christmas. It has the ingredients of a normal cake, but will have raisins, cherries, and other fruits, and is baked with wine or rum in it.

5.Learning about Jamaican food helps me stay connected with my parents’ roots. When they make different dishes for me, they talk about how that dish was prepared when they were growing up, which leads to stories about their childhood and family members I never got to know. In a way, learning about Jamaican food brings me closer to my family.

Ghana

1. Influenced by family. Meals are created big because we have big families we need to feed. No meal is small, every meal is meant to fill every belly.

2. Rice and many different types of meat are commonly used in our dishes like goat, cow, pig, and even fish. Commonly eaten to is fufu with different types of soup depending on what is available.

3. Jollof Rice is the main and most familiar of the dishes from Ghana. In simple terms it is rice that has been stewed for hours and the stew is soaked in the rice.

4. Most foods are eaten year round but for special occasions, special spices and more important meals that take longer like oxtail stew and a special dessert called bofrot, which is a type of donut only made for special occasions.

5. Food helps individuals to stay connected to their root and culture.
