- Mexico gave Texas territory to California for 15 Million dollars
- This treaty expanded the states by about 33%
- Rio Grande became the southern border of the U.S. Texas territory
- Slave trade prohibited in Washington D.C.
- The Fugitive Slave Law was passed
- No slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico
- Allowed people of the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they would be pro or anti slavery
- The act appealed the Missouri Compromise
- People allover fled to make the decision
- Series of Seven debates held in Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy, and Alton Illinois
- Debates to see who would win one of the two seats U.S. Senate
- Lincoln lost but it sparked his run for President later
- Lincoln would become president of the United States
- His name was not on 10 of the southern states ballets
- Lincoln won without the popular vote but the electoral

- John Brown and staunch abolitionists captured and seized citizens from Harper's Ferry
- They also seized the federal armory and arsenal
- They hoped the local slaves would join the raid
- People from both North and South were affected greatly
- Series of scetches showing how difficlt slavery was
- Helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War
- Series of violent political confrontations in the United States anti- slavery and pro- slavery
- More and more people moved to Kansas and Nebraska
- Numbers of settlers died in the travel to Kansas
- Dred Scott argued he was entitled to emancipation (Freedom).
- Chief Justice Roger B. Taney disagreed with Scott.
- Court decided no black, free or slave, could claim U.S. citizenship. Therefore blacks couldn't petition for freedom in court
- One of the most significant events before the 19th Century
- Many men sold all their belongings for trips to California
- Discovered by James Marshall while building saw mill
