Security Prevention Methods

Firewalls

Firewalls monitor traffic and block anything that appears to be dangerous or illegitimate.

Hardware firewalls protect the network.

Software firewalls protect individual devices.

Hardware firewalls are good for preventing DoS attacks.

There are specialist tools and techniques designed to help protect networks from these types of attacks. These include:

  • Firewalls
  • Encryption

Encryption

Encryption will turn data transmitted into a coded form that cannot be read.

HTTPS uses encryption for transmitting data over the web securely.

VPNs are also used to create an encrypted connection over the internet.

This prevents data accessed through sniffing being read.

Data Transmission Security Issues

Sniffing

A packet sniffer will inspect all data being transmitted over a network, even if not intended for you.

- WiFi = vulnerable

- Mobile broadband = not vulnerable

- Wired = difficult to connect to network

without being noticed.

Security Issues

Data transmitted over a network can be vulnerable to eavesdropping.

Two techniques for this are:

  • Sniffing
  • Spoofing

Spoofing

A computer pretends to be another computer to gain access to services, such as private data.

A key tool in denial of service attacks.

All kinds of connection and networks are vulnerable, but easier on wireless due to ease of access.
