People are super busy today, pursuing graduation, careers, relationships, commerce and sustenance. A lot of people complain of being tired of constantly working (though a lot of the time they're just being lazy). This is the constant spiral of SOCIETY!!!
1920's Culture
People of this time were always pursuing things, whether it be money, a family, a job, alcohol, etc. The people who were pursuing were being pursued by those who had power over them. This led to everyone being busy as they were either pursuing or being pursued, thus leading to a very tired society.
At this point in the novel, Jordan and Nick are conversing (and snogging) about how Gatsby has done an innumerable amount of things just to please Daisy.

Gatsby pursued wealth for many years but only because of his love for Daisy. He lived a fabulous life that would never suffice, constantly busy but never satisfied. Nick has just gotten this info. about Daisy and Gatsby, yet he is also pursuing something (or rather someone) himself.
