  • The epic hero usually undertakes a QUEST/ JOURNEY to achieve something of great value to themselves or society
  • Epic heroes “LIVE ON AFTER DEATH”…meaning they are forever remembered by those who live after them…achieving a type of IMMORTALITY
  • Not a “Superman” with magical powers, but a “REGULAR” human (sometimes part god/part human) whose aspirations and accomplishments set him/her apart
  • Overcomes great obstacles, but maintain humanity

The hero often refuses the call to adventure due to insecurity.

Think-Pair-Share

:)

Based on the information given, can you think of any novels or movies that could be considered an "epic" or that feature an epic hero?

Hint: Think Disney or Pixar

3 Stages of

the Hero's Journey

1) Departure

2) Initiation

3) Return

#5. Apotheosis

Example

  • Simba realizes he must also fight for his father.
  • Simba and Scar battle until the hyenas kill him.

#1. The Refusal of Return

  • Simba is now the true leader

The lull between changing themselves and the world.

"The other world is just so cool!!"

HERO

(Once the hero has finished his/her quest, they may not want to return home. The other world is more appealing.)

Comes to a realization about the purpose of life, and the purpose of themselves.

Note: There are many variations of the hero's journey or "monomyth" but all versions follow a similar pattern!

Example

  • Simba does not refuse his call to be king because he knows he must take responsibility for the kingdom

#6. Ultimate Boon

"With great power comes great responsibility..."

Using the power for good!

Example

  • When the hyenas finish off Scar, Simba takes his rightful spot as king.

#2. Magic Flight

When the hero must escape!

They escape at the last second, barely surviving. In myths and folktales, the flight is usually literally a 'magic flight' (faeries, flying bison, etc. etc.).

#3. Crossing of the Return Threshold

Things are back to normal.

Example

  • Simba rebuilds Pride Rock after Scar nearly destroyed it

The hero finishes their quest, and can return home.

The Return Threshold

  • When in Pride Rock, Mufasa shows his acceptance and blessing by taking his place as the king
