The criteria for this assignment are as follows:

The most relevant H&S act is the "Health and Safety at Work Act 1974" which covers legislation for all industries.

The most relevant legislation however is the "Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992". This mentions the following:

  • The display screen should display well-defined characters of adequate size and spacing.
  • have a stable image
  • have easily adjustable brightness and contrast
  • tilt and swivel easily to suit the user
  • be free from glare and reflections
  • use a separate base for the screen, or an adjustable table.
  • First aid kits are placed strategically around the office building.
  • Fire extinguishers are placed in sensible location, i.e. near high-density IT equipment and near workstations.
  • Qualified first-aiders are always available.
  • Information regarding H&S legislation is made readily available for viewing.
  • Fire escapes and escape procedures are taught to the employees and congregation points are identified.
  • Training regarding tools and other equipment is available, alongside manual handling courses that are freely supplied by the employer.

The H&S manager is Darren Roe.

Primary first aid is Stephen Gilbert.

Regular meetings (two or three times a year) should be held with employees to keep up to date with HSE regulations. (http://www.hse.gov.uk)

The health and safety manager for ecl-ips is Darren Roe.

The office workspace is managed by a private company on the same business park as ecl-ips, Harris Business Park.

When on a customer site, the relevant H&S manager would be the manager of said customer site.

  • The keyboard should be tiltable and separate from the screen to allow the user to adopt a comfortable working position
  • have a space in front to provide support for the hands or arms of the user
  • have a matte surface
  • have clearly legible symbols on the keys.
  • Being seated in the same position for extended periods
