GOAL!
Innovations of the ETC
- Tolls used to have to only be paid by hand with cash or change.
- Eventually, people could use credit or debit cards to pay instead of cash or change.
- E-ZPass was invented in 1987. This allowed road users to pay electronically without stopping to pay.
- I-Pass was invented in 1993. It works the same as E-ZPass.
Why was the Electronic Toll Collection Invented?
The Electronic toll collection was invented because the workers that worked was breathing in the car smoke which is unhealthy. Another reason is to speed up the process.
Electronic Toll Collections
History of ETC
In 1959, Nobel Economics Prize Winner William Vickrey was the first to propose a system of electronic tolling.
In the 1960s and 1970s, free tolling was tested with fixed transponders.
Toll roads have been around for at least 27 hundred years.

How do ETC's work today?
- Meant to eliminate delay on toll roads.
- I-Pass or E-ZPass are used to mark cars to toll them (not everyone has them).
- Toll prices are typically higher for cars paying with cash/change.
- In congested cities (i.e. Boston), ETC's allow tolls to be charged without having cars slow down.
- Typically people have to slow down to 5 or 10 mph, but that isn't the case everywhere.
