Early 20th Century

Early Country/Western

Throughout the 1930s and the 1940s, western music became popular. Country music often consists of ballads and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments, like banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, and fiddles. Popular artists during this time were Hank Williams, and Gene Autry.

1950's Rock and Roll

What do you get when you put a guitar in front of an R&B group? Rock and Roll! Rock and Roll is a genre of music that originated in the United States during the late 1940’s and early 1950s. Popular Rock and Roll artists during this time were Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley & the Comets, and Buddy Holly.

This era included the genres ragtime and blues. Blues music was an type of expressive african-american music base off frustration for racism, segregation, and slavery. Ragtime music was the best music to dance to at this time.

Early 1800s

Renaissance Era

Stephen Foster, known as the “father of American music.” He was an American so

ngwriter who wrote over 200 songs, and many of his songs still remain popular after 150 years.

John Philip Sousa was an American conductor and composer of the late romantic era and he was known for being in the American military and leading patriotic marches.

Genres in the Renaissance era included music like choral music, gypsy/folk music, etc. Musicians during this time were Josquin Des Perez and Claudio Monteverdi.

n Mesopotamia and Egypt, they used hieroglyphics and created early instruments and the art of music.

In Greece, Pythagoras invented musical scales. Each scale and mode was used for different feelings or occasions. Such as celebrations, war, etc.

Medieval Era (600 A.D-1400 A.D)

In this era there was the evolution of choral music, thanks to the Christian church. Monks and minstrels used harmonies. The music at this time told stories.

1930's/1940's Swing Era

Baroque Era

Swing era went on during the 1930 and went on until the end of World War 2 in 1945. During this era there were a lot of dancing. Artists include Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman.

Classical Era

This era was filled with extravagance. Everything was big and fancy, including the clothes, the art, the dance, and especially the music. It included larger works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, choirs, etc. Musicians during this era are Bach, who was a german composer for the Lutheran church.

1940s Rhythm and Blues

Often abbreviated as R&B, rhythm and blues is a genre of popular african-american music. Created by Louis Jordan, who wanted to play blues and dance, but didn’t like the other styles. So, he created the musical style called R&B.

Classical era used lighter and clearer textures for their music. It was less complex than others. Composers include Mozart, who created over 600 works before his death at age 35. His first symphony was when he was just four years old. Another composer is Haydn, known as the father of symphony.

Romantic Era

Music from this era included strong emotion and it attempted to increase emotional expression. The music had denser, heavier musical textures. Composers in this era include Beethoven, who was one of the first romantic composers, Gioachino Rossini, who was a very popular composer and wrote 39 operas mostly about the lower. Usually his pieces of work tended to be sad.

1920's Jazz/Prohibition Era

1959-1963 Rock ‘N’ Roll

Rock and Roll didn’t acquire the name until the 1950s. Classic Rock and Roll is usually played with one or two electric guitars, a string bass (or after the mid-1950s) an electric bass guitar, and a drum kit. Artists include Bob Dylan and The Byrds.

This era was known as the prohibition era. Music during this time was to influence dancing. Jazz ended in 1929 when the Great Depression occurred. Artists around this time were Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
