Plaiting: When two or more elements are interlaced. Looks more like "weaving"

Because of the baskets' light weight they were ideal for transporting dry good such as grain, bread and clay for builders.

This is their Instrumental purpose

Artistic elements and designs in basket weaving:

Sometimes red, black or white colors were used to decorate

* Weaving patterns served as intricate decoration

Sometimes designs were sews on afterward and helped to reinforce the basket

Basket Weaving is one of the worlds oldest crafts and is an ancient Egyptian tradition.

Baskets have been found from as early as 5000 BCE

Basket Weaving

Why are they considered artifacts?

The raw materials for making baskets were widely available in Egypt.

These were materials such as: grasses, reeds, stalks, twigs, palm leaves and occasionally leather.

Fun Fact: They used the same weaving techniques that they used to make baskets, to make their sandals!

There are many methods to making baskets but we are looking at two major ones: Coiling and Plaiting

Coiling: cords are formed of braided or twisted strands of plant fiber, then coiled into a spiral and sewn together
