Edward Lemert
Sociologist Edward Lemert differentiated between Primary and Secondary Deviance.
The difference in Primary and Secondary Deviance is the reaction recieved from the society to the deviant.
Primary Deviance
- When a deviant recieves little reaction from society
- Ex: a minor that smokes cigarettes isn't frowned upon by her peer group because the group smokes together, but underaged smoking is still a deviant behavior.
- smoking doesn't really have a bad consequence

Secondary Deviance
- this happens when the deviant gets negative sanctions from society
- Ex: underaged smoker is frowned upon by her peer group; they make fun of her and call her out of her name. this makes the girl kind of feel unworthy and she starts smoking more than she did before
