Innovations of Mesopotamia

By:Bryan

The Engineering

Laws

The Mesopotamian invented wheels to build wagons for carrying crops. War chariots were also invented because of the invention of the engineering. The wheel was an important step to the development of the cities.

The most well-known set of laws of the Mesopotamians was the Code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi was a king of Babylon. He once said that the gods had told him write down laws to make sure that "the strong may not oppress the weak." Hammurabi's code lists 282 laws. They covered all aspects -of-people's daily-life. Each law has a set punishment.

The Astronomy

Mesopotamian also found out a calendar that shows 12-months per year, 24-hours per day based on the cycles of the moon. And they have split the year into two seasons: summer and winter.

Writing

Mesopotamian also developed written language as well. Education, laws, history, and literature all became possible after humans could record their ideas. The writing that was developed by Mesopotamian was called "cuneiform."

Mathematics

Mathematics were invented to calculate and keep track of taxes and trading records. Their counting system was mostly about number 60. Nowadays, we are still using 60 to count time in minutes and seconds.

Farming Technology

Mesopotamian invented many tools for farming in order to make it easier, such as they harnessed animals to pull ploughs. They altered the ploughs so that it could turn the soil and drop seeds into the freshly ploughed rows.
