USACE Origins
In 1775 George Washington & The Continental Congress authorized the first Chief Engineer, Richard Gridley, whose first task was to build fortifications near Boston at Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War
The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

In 1904 the U.S. purchased the assets of the New French Panama Canal Company who’s disease ravaged workers were more than happy to see the Corps of Engineers take over the project.
Flood Control Act of 1936
Enormous landslides
reeked havoc during construction and created a very hazardous work environment. Structures, such as railways and retaining walls, that took months to build could be wiped out in less than a minute.
An Act of the United States Congress signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on 22 June 1936. It authorized civil engineering projects such as dams, levees, dikes, and other flood control measures through the United States Army Corps of Engineers and other Federal agencies. It is one of a number of Flood Control Acts passed on a regular basis by the United States Congress
