- Building on the discoveries of Sigmund Freud, Klein recognized the centrality of the infant’s first relationships with its primary caregivers and she illuminated the early mental processes that build up a person’s inner emotional world.
- Depressive position - follows the paranoid-schizoid position in the infant's development and is usually begins in the second six months of life. The child begins to integrate its fragmented perceptions of its parents and has a more integrated sense of self.
