How does it work?
When did this start?
- There are many ways that China uses to censor the internet from people.
- The first way is through bottlenecks.
- Bottlenecks are computer stations that monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic.
- There are only three stations.
- One near Beijing
- One in Shanghai
- And one in Guangzhou (southern China)
- The Communist party officially took over China in 1947.
- Wasn't until May 2001 that the "Great Firewall" was launched to censor the internet.
- It is a system that filters all incoming and outgoing internet traffic.
What is Censorship?
How does it work (cont.)
So what?
- Censorship is a bad thing and needs to be eliminated.
- But it is a complicated process.
- We should work together to get China to relax its censorship.
- Second way is through Packet Sniffers.
- Packet Sniffers are special routers that can inspect all data and block connections to censored material.
- Third way is through self-censorship/threatening people.
- If you publish something the government doesn't like, you will get notified and have 30 minutes to take it down.
- Fourth way is through help from other countries.
- American companies have actually helped China with their censorship.
- Cisco Systems supplied special routers for Chian's censorship.
- Google developed a censored search engine for China.
- "The suppression or proscription of speech or writing that is deemed obscene, indecent, or unduly controversial."
- Or, it is "the practice of supervising conduct or morals and a censor as someone who examines materials and prohibits what he or she considers morally, politically, or aesthetically objectionable."
What are the Pros of Censorship?
What are the Cons of Censorship?
- There are actually pros for Internet censorship
- First is that it provides jobs.
- Because many companies are banned in China, it allows for Chinese businesses to flourish and provide jobs.
- Second, it allows Chinese entrepreneurs the chance to succeed.
- This is because of the fact that many companies are banned from China.
- First, it prevents Chinese individuals from learning about the new technologies and information from around the world.
- Thus limiting growth and development
- Second, it limits freedom of speech
