During That Era
Back in the 1950's, toys were very simple and the child
had to use their imaginations to have fun considering
they were not electronic. With the invention of this longer lasting battery, toys became better and more advanced.
Also, things like radios and phones no longer needed to
be plugged into the wall. This made things
more convenient for most families.
The Contribution
How did he Improve Present
Day Life?
throughout the 1950's many engineers had experimented
with alkaline batteries but nobody had been able to develop a
longer running battery. Considering it cost
more to make a battery than they were worth back then.
By improving the alkaline battery's chemical
contents, he was able to revolutionize the battery
for the better. Allowing the battery's to have a longer life span and there for toys and appliances lasted longer and people were more satisfied with the product.
The Improvement
Wanting to improve the batteries faults,Urry
tested numerous chemicals such as
manganese dioxide and Zinc with the batteries
previous formula.
His main problem was that the battery could not provide enough power. Urry managed to overcome
this problem by using
powdered zinc
in the
batteries.
This combination of manganese dioxide
and zinc powder with an alkaline
substance outlasted regular
carbon-zinc batteries by
nearly 40 times.
Canadian Inventors
early Life...
Lewis Frederick Urry was born in Pontypool, Ontario on
January 29, 1927.
Urry graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto in 1950. Having previously spent time serving in the Canadian army, he went to work for Eveready a few months after graduating.
