The Rise Of Nazism In Northeim
Notheim was a small but thriving country town in Northern Germany, with shops and businesses serving the farming community. It nestled on a hillside, overlooking the River Leine. In 1930, it had a population of 10,000.
It was both a railway centre (more than a thousand Northeimers worked for the railway) and a centre of local government (which employed a further 1300 people). However, it had a little industry. In the 1920s the railway and the civil service were the biggest employers.
Northeimers sacrificed alot for Germany in WW1; 253 were killed. Like other Germans, Northeimers were very alarmed at the revolution of 1918. In the turbulent years after the war many Northeimers sided with the right-wing Nationalist parties. In 1922 there was a major battle in the town centre between the Socialists and Nationalists. Gangs fought hand to hand with beer bottles. Almost every shop window in the centre was broken, before the police restored control.
In the wake of this battle five middle class Northeimers decided to set up a local branch of the Nazi Party.
How the Nazi took over Northeim:
The way in which the Nazis took over Northeim is said to symbolize how they took over the whole of Germany.
Any opponents of the Nazi party were rounded up by the SA, SS and Gestapo and were sentenced without proper trial. Many were sent to concentration camps.
