The Lord of the Flies
by William Golding.
Macbeth's decisions were influenced in a negative manner by Lady Macbeth. She emotionally manipulated Macbeth by questioning his manhood, her greed for power for her husband to rule led to extreme violence when Macbeth killed many people, leaving both her and Macbeth with a guilty conscience.
In both Macbeth and Lord of the Flies we see a similarity between how far each leader is willing to go to obtain power. In the Lord of the Flies, Jack is very driven to gain power. His desire for power leads him to violence and savagery, which is very similar in comparison to Macbeth. Jack is willing to do whatever it takes to be leader, for example, Jack gets into a physical altercation with Ralph (the leader of the group) in order to gain more respect and power. Macbeth plans to kill King Duncan in order to take his role as King. Both Jack and Macbeth's greed for power and status leads to violence as well as a guilty conscience from murders.
Lady Macbeth starts off strong and determined however her guilty conscience eventually causes her to suffer great consequences. Her characters personality is altered and weakens throughout her role because of her guilty conscience.
"Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck" (3.2.45).
Macbeth has hired two murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance but Lady Macbeth is unaware of her husband's plan The audience however is aware of his ideas, displaying dramatic irony, this occurs because Lady Macbeth is not aware of her husbands plans for murder. These murders led to the emotional and social downfall of the Macbeth's resulting in a guilty conscience.
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair" (1.1.11).
"Come, thick night, And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell,"(1.5.49-50).
The witches quoted this in the beginning of the play to set an ominous tone for the audience. The predictions (prophecies) they offer are beautiful to Macbeth, however they lead him to evil actions, for example, committing murder in order to achieve higher power which resulted in a guilty conscience.
Lady Macbeth calls for spirits to bring on night time. The spirits do this in hopes to 'cover up' the murder that Lady Macbeth is planning. The use of particular words such as, "thick night"and "dunnest smoke" create visual representation in our minds.
Macbeth is displayed as a loyal, valiant and a strong character at first, as the play progresses his character begins to change for the worse. He is corrupted into planning murders in order to achieve the position as King of Scotland. Once committing the murders, he immediately felt guilty which weakened his character immensly.
Macbeth's actions were negatively affected by the witches prophecies, which resulted in major violence when he committed murder in order to seize the Scottish throne. The witches put prophecies in Macbeth's mind, manipulating his actions.
The witches created three prophecies which, once were planted in the mind, causes actions to be manipulated. By using charms, spells, and prophecies, the witches are able to plot mischief against.
Greed for power can lead an individual to manipulate those around them, destroying relationships and resulting in extreme violence and a guilty conscience.
"Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" (2.2.58-59).
Blood comes to symbolize guilt once Macbeth and Lady Macbeth committed murders, resulting in a guilty conscience leaving them feeling that their actions have marked them in a way that cannot be washed away. Macbeth expresses that there is not enough water in the sea to cleanse his hands from the guilt of murdering King Duncan. Blood also symbolizes the crimes committed by Macbeth.
