At the end of the book, Mara finds out about her power and uses it the wrong way. And I believe the reason Michelle Hodkin wrote the book the way she did was to send the message to use your powers for good, and to also not allow rage to overwhelm you. Even if your lawyer-of-a-dad's client is the guy who took your little brother.
Soon, things go straight from strangely abnormal to freakishly weird. When Mara's little brother is taken, a fire rises up inside of her, feeding to her rage. Upon finding out who took him, she plans a way to use her powers, the ability to kill by planning out a person's death, to get rid of the man. When her father gets shot in the crossfire, the fire dies and leaves her feeling guilty. Finally deciding to give up, she goes to the police station to turn herself in. But when she sees her ex, the fact he's still alive turns her into a screaming wreck of guilt and hatred.
