This crazy attitude, this exaggerated sense of national interest can even inspire them to invade and take over other countries.

The conflict got so bad that in the 1990s, the United Nations took over administration of the province.

In 2008, Serbians in the region lived in separate areas protected by UN police forces and troops from the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance, or NATO.

These forces also patrolled the border between Serbia and Kosovo.

Kosovo's declaration of independence moved some Serbians closer to Ultranationalism. They feared that they were losing not only territory, but also sites that have been connected to Serbian traditions and culture since the 14th century.

Some slogan's for the Serbians were:

"Kosovo is ours" and "Kosovo is Serbia"

How can Nationalism lead to Ultranationalism?

Focus of Chapter 6

Kosovo

In chapter 6, we are looking at how nationalism, and a love for ones country, can lead to the craycray idea that your nation is so awesome, every other nation sucks and should be more like yours.

We're going to be looking at ways ultranationalism can come about and real historical examples of ultranationalism.

We'll look at how this can happen by

looking at Russia while Joseph Stalin

was in power.

Until February 17th, 2008, Kosovo was a province of Serbia. But on that date, the Kosovo government declared independence.

Why was this crazy? throughout Kosovo's history, they have experienced religious and ethnic intolerance and violence.

80% of people are muslim, and only 10% are orthodox Christians.

90% are ethnic Albarnians; the rest are ethnic Serbians.

What is Ultranationalism?

Important terms to know for this chapter:

Ultranationalism: An extreme form of nationalism. Ultranationalists are often fanatically loyal to their own nation and hostile toward other nations. They usually have the mentality of "Us" and "Them".

Nationalism: Spirit or aspirations common to the whole of a nation. Devotion and loyalty to one's own country; patriotism.

Propoganda: Information and ideas that are spread to achieve a specific goal. Extreme nationalists may use misleading and dishonest information to create fear and insecurity and to persuade people to behave in certain ways.

That was Joseph Stalin.

Change and crisis: These can inspire nationalists to become ultranationalists.

When you're national identity and national interests are threatened, the rights of your own group can become ALL-IMPORTANT.

He was leader of Russia during WWII and in the cold war. He was one of the few that were responsible for making Russia a communist country.

Stalin was so good at controlling his government and nation that he was able to foster a sense of nationalism that was so strong, it became known as ultranationalism.

One of his major and more effective tools was Propaganda.

Think about how you'd react if your national culture or national interests were put in jeopardy by someone else? how would you react?
