Common Types of Eating Disorders

The way to discover whether somebody has this illness is to be aware and conscious of their eating habits. If they are constantly checking the calories in a food, eating little to no food or eating a lot and then feeling guilty afterward, they may be suffering with some form of this disorder. Another sign of an eating disorder is body changes, such as rapid weight loss/weight gain, loss of hair, fatigue and constant depression. If someone also

constantly exercises and is constantly attempting to lose calories from a meal, it is possible that they are suffering for this disorder.

What tends to be effective is counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy. Eating disorders are curable in the sense that they can be overcome but they can also be re-acquired. It can be overcome through counseling and address of the issue. It can also be overcome through the close monitoring of diet. If the victim is unable to do so for themselves, which they tend to not be, parents or loved ones and those who live with the individual can help with monitoring their diet.

-Bulimia Nervosa

-Binge Eating Disorder

-Overexercising

How They Are Genuinely Acquired

Risk factors include peer pressure, psychological, environmental, and social factors and any family members that may have an eating disorder. The types of people who tend to be prone to this illness are people who are genetically

have a bigger bone mass. Our society tells us that being skinny is the social norm therefore, those people who are hereditary born bigger believe that they are fat and will use forceful unhealthy methods to try and lose weight and it probably won’t work due to their genetic makeup and this vigorous need to lose weight can lead to fatal health issues and death.

-Family members have it

-Societal norms lead them to believe they are fat and therefore unattractive or less worthy of love.

-Negative living and learning environments

-Peer pressure - peers are skinny, peers tell them they are fat, peers have an eating disorder and lead them to believe they should do it and it works.

Eating disorders are an extremely ambiguous type of disorder, the causes are unclear but it can be prevented through constant exposure to self-esteem lifting activities and occurrences, it can also be prevented by a positive living and learning environment and education about the disorder. If young people learn about it, it decreases the risk of them acquiring it later on in life.
