Stonefish and how they are one of the most dangerous fish in the world.

What is a stonefish?

A stonefish is a category of fish that is very protective and is very dangerous to us humans that possibly could kill us.

What do they eat?

They eat small reef fish and invertrabrates. They use their camoflauging abilities to get their prey. So they look like a rock.

How do they impact humans?

The venom is lethal to other marine life and to humans. It causes intense pain, breathing problems, heart problems, etc. Some areas, for example, the florida waters. Everyone loves the beach and this fish lives in these shallow waters. So it has an affect on these coastal waters that stonefish live near making them more dangerous.

Stonefish are found in multiple areas like the indo, pacific ocean, the red sea and many more areas. However the most common area is the pacific ocean and they live in shallow waters by beaches.

Yes. Their predators are tiger sharks and great white sharks. A manager at Queensland museum confirmed this stating "I have found many stonfish in tiger sharks and great white sharks guts". Both of the stonefishes predators are hazardous also to humans.

They have 13 sharp dorsal fin spines along its back. Each one has venom in it. Venom will be released if the stonefish has been stepped on or disturbed. Similarly with their predators, but sometimes that venom isn't enough to kill its predators.

The Stonefish's venom is called proteinaceous toxin, verrucotoxin (VTX). This venom is deadly.

Stonefish are suprisignly found in shallow waters but they are amazing camoflaugers. There are very few deaths that we know of but there are 800 to 1,000 stings in a year that need immediate medical attention. When it is camoflauged it looks like a rock. Look at the picture.
