One of the most common uses for a coat of arms was the sheild for a knight. It was a way for them to distinguish themselves amung their enimies.
The coat of arms evolved from simple designs into elaborate and pieces of art.
The charge, the sheild, the helm, the wreath, the crest, and the motto are some parts of the coat of arms.
The statement that explains the family's motivies and intentions within a society is the motto.
The helm usually represents the rank or time period the knight faught.
Decorations above the helm is the crest.
A rope with 6 parts using the first two colors of the crest is the wreath.
Charges are the objects displayed on the surface, or field, of the shield which makes it truly unique for each individual Coat of Arms.
Coat of arms are a symbol of a certian family's achievements and nobility. The meanings of any given one are almost impossible to name fully, but their significance still remains great.
