CCR TASK 3

HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTION SKILLS DEVELOP THROUGH THIS PROJECT

What we learnt during production

PRODUCTION

- How to use a camera

(including, how to adjust white balance, zooming and focusing)

- How to edit

(How to add and detach sound)

- How to use premiere pro

- The rules of a film set

CAMERA WORKSHOP 1

CAMERA WORKSHOP 1

This workshop was crucial, as prior to this I had never held nor used a proper film camera. This workshop taught me several things, including, how to set up a camera correctly, using a tripod as well as a battery pack. once the camera was set up, I further learned how to focus the lens, zoom in and out and adjust the white balance. This workshop was incredibly important and helped me gain necessary experience that i was then able to use on the day of our shoot, such as how to quickly and efficiently "bubble" the camera in order to make it level, and then shoot the scene, this workshop even helped me when filming our test shoot, as it taught me not only how to operate a camera but how to effectively film by focusing and zooming the camera lens.

CAMERA WORKSHOP 2

CAMERA WORKSHOP 2

During our second workshop we learnt several rules, including the 180 degree rule, rules of thirds and important rules on the set.

First of all we learnt the order in which scenes should be shot, its crucial that wide shots are always taken first, as this can be used on its own if other shots aren't right.

The 180 degree rule is extremely useful when filming dialogue, as it creates continuity for the audience.

When on set everything has to be very concise and organised, a way in which the director manages the set is through specific lingo, whereby several calls are shouted in order to get everyone on set ready (standby, camera roll, action and cut)

Camera workshop 2 was incredibly important and taught me several lessons I used during the shoot day, a major one being not to watch footage back and just to take more shots, as we were able to use the excess shots as "filler shots" during our final sequence.

SHOOTING AND EDITING DIALOGUE

SHOOTING AND EDITING DIALOGUE

During this workshop, we used our prior skills learnt in workshop 1 and 2 in order to create a sequence which flowed. By using premiere pro we were able to play about with the footage, making two versions of the same product, the use of ping pong editing centres around dialogue, although we then went on to editing in a way in which that highlights power within the scene, this method was essential and we later went on to use it when we edited our final sequence. Another crucial lesson we learnt was constantly saving our work, as the app crashed a couple of times and deleted our work, this lesson was crucial when it came to our final sequence as the skill of saving after making progress when editing the sequence helped us edit quickly and efficiently.

SHOOT DAY REFLECTION

SHOOT DAY REFLECTION

On the day of our shoot we used several skills, including how to use and operate a camera effectively. Although we faced several problems which we had to find a solution for on the day of the shoot, such as costume mishaps! We further used our storyboard in order to have a rough gauge of the shots necessary, although we were able to film far more shots than we had anticipated, this resulted in us changing the ending of our opening title sequence on the day. Our shoot ran fairly smoothly, although this was all down to planning and preparation whereby we had already filmed a test shoot, which gave us a rough insight on what we were going to expect on the day of the shoot, and what skills we needed, meaning that we learnt most of the mistakes we could make during the test shoot as opposed to during the a actual shoot.

WHAT I LEARNT FROM RESEARCH AND PLANNING

RESEARCH AND PLANNING

- What titles are and why they're important

- Why titles are necessary

- What a storyboard is and why they're important

- How to make a storyboard and use it

- Why test shoots are important

- How test shoots can allow you to further develop your idea.

- The common conventions of my proposed genre

TITLES

LINK TO WHAT TITLES ARE: https://daisykatesmarka1media.blogspot.com/2021/12/what-are-titles.html

WHAT ARE TITLES

This blog post taught me the importance of titles and how they can construct meaning and tell a story. In most opening title sequence there are 21 titles, they are used to highlight key information such as the funding, making, and production of the film. There's a set order, although some production companies miss some titles out or show them twice. The skills I learnt in this blog post helped me when editing, as I was able to understand what titles should look like and the order in which they go in. I further learnt the importance of titles, and how they are able to tell a story in themselves as well as reveal hints to the narrative. Therefore the yellow, bold titles are a connotation to madness, optimism and danger which reveals hints to the narrative.

STORYBOARDS

OUR GROUP STORYBOARD

The skills I learnt in this task helped us not only develop our idea as we were able to plan out roughly how the shooting day would go, but it also helped me develop my drawing skills! A storyboard is an illustrated plan of the shots necessary in the order you will shoot it in on the day, by planning ahead this reduces the time wasted on the day. The storyboard wasn't only useful during production, it was also useful when editing, as it gave us a rough guide of what was necessary. The use of a storyboard meant that everyone on set knew the rough plan for the day as everyone was able to visually have the same understanding of what the plan was, I believe this is part of the reason our shoot day was so smooth. The storyboard further helped us when editing as we knew the exact order of the sequence, although we did change certain shots but it acted as a good rough outline that proved to be very useful.

TEST SHOOT

TEST SHOOT

Test shoots are mock shoots of the actual sequence, by doing this we were able to adapt and change our idea massively even though we thought it was near enough ready. The test shoot helped us to properly visualise our idea, and once it was completed and edited we were then able to realise what we needed to improve for our actual shoot. A major thing we grasped was that we needed to shoot a few more scenes in on our shoot day, as the test shoot was barely a minute, a way in which we did this was by saying "cut" much later than we thought we should have, in order to get shots that we can use elsewhere.

During our test shoot, we used skills that we learnt during our camera workshops 1 and 2. Furthermore, the skills and lessons we learnt from our test shoot were crucial when filming our actual opening title sequence. Moreover, our test shoot gave me an insight to editing, whereby I was in charge of editing it, I had little prior knowledge of how to do this task, although we had workshops that taught us important skills that were very helpful, by assigning roles prior to this shoot, we were able to find out weather or not we enjoyed said roles and if they would work for the actual shoot. I thoroughly enjoyed editing, although on our actual shoot day I took the role of DOP, because as it group we thought it would be important to have a go at several roles.

RESEARCH INTO THE ACTION THRILLER GENRE

RESEARCH GENRE

The choice of genre in our opening title sequence was crucial. I researched 6 genres and broadened my understanding on the common conventions necessary to successfully create one. An action genre consists of violence, a hero and a villain. The analysis of The Dark Knights opening title sequence taught me the importance of soundtracks, whereby they help to create tension. Moreover, when looking into Thrillers I looked at the opening title sequence of "Joker", which shows an element of realism, whilst having several twists in the plot. A way in which I used my knowledge of these genres to develop our ides is to make sure tension was heightened through the use of sound (soundtrack as well as ambient sound) and also mise-en-scene (costumes disguising the characters). By watching other films of the same genre I was able to grasp what is necessary to make a similar product successfully and effectively, which further helped to develop my idea.

FINAL SEQUENCE

To conclude, I believe that our opening title sequence went very well. By completing workshops during pre-production and post production this meant that I was well equipped for the shoot day and the editing stage, due to the skills I learnt surrounding the camera as well as editing. Additionally the research and planning prior to the shoot was hugely beneficial as it enabled us to further develop our idea as well as remain organised as it gave us a rough outline of the day. By conducting research prior to the shoot, such as "how a girl can over power a man" this meant that we were able to rehearse our action scenes prior to the shoot, and perfect the shot, this research was crucial as it saved us a lot of time on the day of the shoot.
