As online sales are becoming more popular with artists and art buyers I’m going to investigate the growing opportunities social media brings to an artist. I decided to look at the affect of social media, and how it impacts online sales for an artist. I noticed a lot of fellow art students of mine have set up Instagram or Facebook pages to showcase their artwork lately, and began wondering how important it is to give yourself a platform online to present your work and if this is the way forward in gaining recognition for your artwork.

Yoko Ono was a major figure in the 1960s New York underground art scene. Known for her experimental art, music, filmmaking, and feminism, as well as for her marriage to John Lennon. Ono was associated with the Fluxus movement, a loose group of avant-garde Dada-inspired artists. Who worked in fields ranging from music to performance to the visual arts. She continues to produce work and make headlines today. Ono's performances and instructional paintings of the early 1960s changed forever the relationship between artist and audience. One of her earliest performances ‘Cut piece’, Ono kneeled on the floor in a room and invited members of the audience to come up and cut away pieces of her dress using scissors, a first for feminist art performance.

Yoko Ono has quite an online presence, although all of her online pages are for her music and art career. Her Facebook profile specifies that she is a musician and posts solely of her music career. Her Instagram page is much more personal to her, containing photos of herself and her everyday life, Twitter appears to be where you can follow her art practice, with imges of her own artworks she even retweets other artists work. The strongest part of her relationship with the internet is her website, containing exbitions past, present and future. All of her music is attached through spoify, view all of her social medias on her website. Ono even has a place for her audience to participate in her atwork and displays live statistics of the amount of people viewing her website at any given time.

I have found a number of different websites that are selling Yoko Ono’s artworks through galleries and online auctions with prices ranging from three hundred and fifty euro to ten thousand. And of course I have discovered online sellers who are selling Yoko Ono’s signed legal documents, this has made it clear that Ono’s worldwide fame has made her art treasures to the right buyer. Her online profiles are extremely sophisticated with posts going up daily, she is constantly connected to the world, with a click of button you can see new content ensuring that she is always current in the art world, this only increases online sales for her art.

Compared to Yoko Ono, David Beattie has little online presence. Beattie has a simple website including his CV and links to exhibitions he has been involved with. I was unable to find any Instagram, Tumblr or Youtube channel. The only social media he appears to have is a personal facebook account where he shares articles and upcoming exhibitions about his work to his Facebook friends. Unfortunately I have not come across any websites selling Beatties artwork, making online sales for him nonexistent. Does this put him at a disadvantage not having an online art market for his work?
How can artists make sure they are using all resourses possible to promote themselves.
Today you can buy just about anything on the internet, art is no exception. According to a study commissioned by Invaluable. The survey found that nearly a quarter (22.7%) of art buyers find new works of art via social media, which edged out museums (20%) and galleries (15.9%) as buyers’ primary source of discovery. Millennials are leading this change, with 44.3% of young millennials (ages 18–24) and 33.8% of older millennials (ages 25–34) saying they discover art on social media. Millennials are also increasingly buying art online, viewing the purchasing of art as both a long-term investment and a unique experience. Online art sales in 2015 reached $3.27 billion, increasing by 24% year over year and representing 5.1% of the art market, according to the Hiscox Online Art Trade Report. If the online art market continues to grow at that rate, it will reach $9.58 billion by 2020. Looking at these growing figures, online sales are the way forward and a strong online presence is the best way to achieve this.
