John the Victim

Conclusion

  • Entering into a civilized world, John became a spectacle for the society

  • John became confused, mixing up what he knew, what he heard and what he saw

  • Evidently, the Savage was affected through his individualism, becoming a catalyst, victim and flawed hero while disrupting his friends, family and all other societal figures.

John the Flawed Hero

"The savage pushed her away with such force that she staggered and fell. "Go, get out of me sight or I'll kill you" (Huxley 177)

Secondary Quote

"Just under the crown of the arch dangled a pair of feet. "Mr. Savage!" (Huxley 231)

"A parents number one job is to keep a child safe and help her/him survive to adulthood and become a contributing member to society" (Howard)

Question: How many believe that "Brave New World" and the individuals within effected John, or did Johns actions affect himself?

"Do you know, they shut me out of everything? When the other boys were sent out to spend the night on the mountains they wouldn't let me go with the others; they wouldn't tell me any of the secrets. I did it by myself" (Huxley 128)

"I ate civilization... it poisoned me; I was defiled. "I ate my own wickedness" (Huxley 216)

John the Catalyst

Secondary Quote

" a sense of community can have catalytic effects, by affecting the perception of the environment, social relations and one's perceived control and empowerment" (Wandersman)

"It makes me feel as though.. I were more me, if you see what I mean. More of my own, not so completely a part of something else. Not just a cell in the social body" (Huxley,90)

Thesis

The character known as John the Savage, whom is shown as a spectacle, connects the idea of becoming deliberately affected through the images of a catalyst, victim and flawed hero throughout civilization.

"O brave new world!", Miranda was proclaiming the possibility of loveliness, the possibility of transforming even the nightmare into something fine and noble" (Huxley, 190)
