American Indian Movement

(AIM)

younge native americans thought change was too slow and nothing realvant was happening so they settted up a group called american indian movement (AIM) AIM fought for equal rights also improved living conditions for native americans. clyde bellecourt and dennis banks were the founders of AIM later in november 1969 AIM and other groups took over the altraz island which is a former prison and is off the coast of san francisco beaches. later on native amercian wanted the attention from america to neglect their civil rights. after the the groups surrenderd besides AIM

when the civil rights groups surrendered in june 1971 AIM was not finished with its protest. at the end of 1972 AIM activist had taken over the burae of indian affairs in washigton DC next they demanded the lands and rights gaurranteed with the united states after a bit AIM surrenedr thair building due to how the united states responded to their request and to review their complaints. next febuary 1973, 200 members of AIM occupied in wounded knee, south dakota. this was a site on which troops from south dakota killed a group of sioux in 1890. after this AIM was vowed to stay until the U.S goverment agreed to review all the native americans problems also to go into treatment for native americans. later on Aim lost many victims to protesting and soon lost all influence to keep protesting even though native american got their treatment and living conditions they did not get their review of all their problems and their rights

AIM first protest was about police brutality which is funny due to how dennis banks was a police man so this shows that this movement was very important to native americans

a termatition policy was announced to be a federal law in 1963 by AIM

aim was orginaly formed in minneapolis minnesota which is were clyde bellecourt was born also in minneapolis was know for its police brutality

dennis banks

dennis banks was a co-finder of AIM and one of the most iconic figures in the 20th centurys. banks career started with him as a police man in minneapolis then later on joined the AIM as a co finder
