History of the Guitar

The word guitar could have come from a middle ages instrument called a guittern. Next

Or a Helenistic instrument called a Kithara.

Next.

This is What a guitar looks like today.

This is a more ancient "guitar"

This Lute is an instrument much like the guitar but it has many strings, a pear shaped body, and a short neck.

The vihuela is also a very popular theory of

how the guitar came to be. It came from the

Spanish and it started out with less strings than

a modern guitar but over time strings were added.

As you can see there are many different theories

of how the guitar came to be but no one knows for sure how it could be one of these, it could be one that isnt here or it could even be a mixture of all of them.

During the seventeenth century there were many different guitar-like instruments that were kind of unusual such as the harp guitar

Between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries the guitar underwent many changes and developements to become what we know today as the guitar.
