Some deaf and hard-of-hearing people are bilingual. This means that they communicate and use two different languages, ASL and English (most commonly). They use English either verbally, or through writing, and use ASL for signing.

"Deaf people can do anything except hear!" -Greg Hlibok, DPN Leader

"The term "hearing-impaired", though considered by hearing people to be politically correct, is actually offensive to the deaf or hard of hearing individual. Why? According to the National Association of the Deaf , "the label focuses on what they can't do. With this label, a standard has been set: the 'hearing' standard. To be anything other than 'hearing' is not acceptable to the mainstream society, and deaf and hard of hearing people have failed to meet the 'standard' . . . Deaf and hard of hearing people believe that there is nothing wrong with them and that their culture, language, and community are just as fulfilling as those experienced by the mainstream society." -National Association of the Deaf (NAD)

Cochlear Implants

Culturally Deaf

Deaf Gain

are surgically implanted electronic devices that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. It is a just a technological aid and will still not allow deaf or hard of hearing people to hear the same way or same things hearing people do.

Facts:

Deaf: partially or totally unable to hear.

Hard of Hearing: Somewhat deaf, still have access to sound, including words

Defined: a person who generally became deaf before acquiring spoken language, or shortly thereafter, and uses American Sign Language as his or her primary language.

(Old Definion)

  • don't consider hearing loss a disability, rather a cultural difference
  • Generally function primarily in the Deaf world.
  • Have a severe to profound hearing loss, as audiologically defined.

(not always)

In the U.S., some 41,500 adults and 25,500 children and youth have been implanted.

There are 36 million Deaf and hard of hearing people in the U.S.

Many Deaf people choose to not wear either. It's not a natural sound and silence IS blissful.

Do's and Don'ts for Hearing People

Do:

  • Use pen and paper to communicate if you don't know sign language
  • Tap on shoulder or flick lights to get Deaf person's attention.
  • Look in eyes, nod and give Facial feedback.
  • Realize that Deaf people are just like you- they are interested in politics, sports, music, entertainment, etc.

Don't:

  • Try to make up your own signs
  • Assume everyone can read lips
  • Kick or throw things to get someone's attention.
  • Assume all Deaf people know ASL
  • Nod your head if you don't understand
  • Bring up or suggest cochlear implants
  • Avoid talking to them
  • Focus only on speaking/listening progress/abilities

The Deaf World often thinks parents should wait until the child is old enough to make that decision for themselves.

Perspectives

Hearing Parents think it is the best or only option if their child is or becomes deaf. (Doctors are involved in decision)

Only 30% of all spoken sounds are visible on the lips. (lip reading is hard!!)

In general- Cochlear implants is a personal choice of either the parents or the deaf person himself/herself.
