There were many reasons why settlement started to grow in the West. When John O' Sullivan use the term Manifest Destiny, the U.S. claim America. Soon word spreaded about the Gold Rush and people started moving west. Then they began to build railroads over the natives land.

John O 'Sullivan was the first one who use the term Manifest Destiny.Which began in the early 1800's and it alowed the U.S. to move out west. John believe that it was America's "Mission" to claim and spread out west. John was a newpaper editor and journalists for United States Magazine and Democratic review. He also was an editor for New York Morning News.

With this new term over a few years they were able to gain Texas,Oregon and California.

While the United States moved father west the Native Americans were being force to move out there lands. The Manifest Destiny affected the Natives to were they had to sell their land and find some where else to live. The consequences of the westard expasion cause the Native americans to change in their everyday life. They move out of their tribal lands and had to learn to farm and leave hunting alone.

Gold Fever

One of the other reason people started moving west was because of the gold rush. The Gold rush started 1848 in California.

  • John Sutter moved to California in 1839 and brought 50,000 acres of land. He began to build sutter fort and later on in 1847 he hired James Marshall to build a sawmill.
  • When Marshall brought a piece of material that look like gold to Sutter ,Sutter told him to keep quiet about it and keep the Gold a sercet.

Soon word got out by 1848 and it became national news all over the country. Everyone talked about gold in california before, but until the discovery no one ready knew. Some people didn't even believe it and thought it was a lie. When President James Polk made an speech about the gold many farmers, merchants and soldiers left there normal lifes and made plans to go to California. Many people soon began to talk about it. Men explain to their wives about how they would leave but come back with pockets full of riches. When they left in 1849 there were known as "49ers"(forty-niners) 'cause they left in 1849.

Along the journey they had to decide whether to sail around South America or walk 2,000 miles on foot. Men who travel on boats became seasick or bored. While other ran out of clean food and water to drink. Another way around to California was on the Oregon California-Trail. As the trip grew longer and longer those walking soon ran out of the supply of water. People from California heard the news and would bring out water jugs to them. Some of them would charge up to $1.00 a drink or $100 a drink. If you didn't have any money you were left to die.
