Books are so old that experts believe the first books were clay slabs that date back to Mesopotamia around 4000 BC.

The most important fact about books to me is that they allowed humans to start keeping records

They have made huge contributions to religion in the world, and are also the reason we can track a lot of our worlds past leaders.

The Printing Press

Newspapers

Experts say newspapers appeared in China first more that 1200 years ago.

The Germans pioneered newspapers printing them as early as the 1600's

By the 1760's the colonies had over 30 papers providing news of business and shipping.

Newspapers also fueled the fires of the American Revolution banding the country together after the Boston Massacre.

Magazines like newspapers were pioneered by the Germans in the late 1600's

Socially magazines have been very influential. They gave citizens the options to read about what they wanted to read about, providing several special interest subjects. The magazine industry was also one of the first industries to provide women with opportunities no other industry would. In 1837 Sarah Hale was named the editor of Godey's Lady Book Magazine where she worked for 40 years. While working as editor she was also advocating for womens right and equal education.

The golden age of magazines in America was from 1885 to 1905. During this time the amount of magazines published doubled from 3500 to 7000.

Magazines vastly expanded the way the media was absorbed by Americans. They exploded with popularity and provided more choice as to how Americans got their news and kept up on their special interests.

In 1842 the era of electronic communication was born.

In 1906 Tubes were invented to amplify and pick up radio signals.

Shortly after the radio was available, the NAVY took it over for strict military purposes. This was during WW1. The NAVY took away all of the patents from those who applied for them. They then declared a moratorium on all of the lawsuits.

Radio provided a solution to citizens who could not afford to buy newspapers, magazines or who could simply not read.

Before radio, many of these citizens needed to rely on others to deliver political, and economical news. With radio being a main source of news, stories could be spread to the masses without people misconstruing them.

AT&T, CBS, NBC, and ABC were among the first networks in the radio industry.

Radio also improved our ability to keep our citizens safe. With radio citizens could be warned about disasters and other emergencies they would otherwise need to wait for papers to hear. The Radio Act of 1912 was a good example of this. The act stated ships at sea were required to keep their radios on 24 hours a day. This was in reaction to the Titanic sinking.

TV

TV was invented in 1927 by an immigrant named Vladimir Zworykin. At the time he was working for Westinghouse and developed a way to transforming a visual image to electrical voltage.

TV forever changed Americans social lives. TV set trends, delivered news from a source you could see, and made people aware of many social and political issues.

While TV was still very young, people had already begun watching as much as 8 hours a day. Programming at first was limited but in the 50's cable was introduced. With the introduction of cable, there was programming available for everyone in the common household.

Later a public service was set up in 1979 called Compuserve. This was used until 10 years later when the World Wide Web was developed. For a long while the internet was used for military purposes as well, but was turned over to the public because of its amount of users.

In my opinion the internet is the most important development in media history since the printing press. It has completely transformed our world. The news we seek, the video and shows we watch, schools, banking, and music have all transferred to some sort of online medium. Across the world 2.2 billion people use the internet. This beats out the number of readers or users that tap into any other medium for news and other information. Also, many other industries have stemmed off of the internet creating a whole new world of commerce.

In the 1980's it is doubtful the public knew how much these phones would come to affect our everyday lives. Today cell phones provide one of the biggest business's across the world. Socially people are more connected to each other than ever before. Cell phones allow the information that the TV, radio, and the internet provide to be in the palm of your hand. We can even be provided actual cable TV on our cell phones along with radio.

Also at this time the very 1st radio station KDKA went on the air from Pittsburgh. Frank Conrad had begun broadcasting from his garage from 7:30 to 9:30 every morning. He supplied news to people in his neighborhood and forever changed the way radio. The early programs set up shortly after KDKA paved the way for future mediums as well. Listeners in this time period would often rush home after work and school to tune into comedy, dramas and news programs.Another very significant thing about commercial radio was presidents were able to address the nation directly.

TV News Casts

TV broadcasts also gave families time to sit down together and experience what was happening throughout the country together. Families could hear and see about political issues that were going on as well as civil rights issues. Also, people who were only able to see their president in newspaper pictures if they could afford it could now watch him address the nation.

The Printing Press was invented in 1456.

Because people were becoming educated and literate the printing press can be credited for bringing on the Enlightenment in Europe.

Newspapers

In 1983 cell phones were introduced to the public by Motorola. At&T and Verizon were the first companies on the scene to capitalize on the business.

The Printing Press gave people a chance to get information from all over the world!

The first TV newscasts began to air in 1940. This was very important because up until this point people had never been able to see who was delivering them their news. Today many people have connections with the anchors who bring them their news. We can see them and feel a relation to them because of it. TV also personalized news and broadcasting as a whole. When you have someone looking at you while they talk to you, you feel a stronger connection to what they're saying.
