Anatomy of the Bass Guitar

The Body

Body

The body is the wooden housing that holds the bridge, pickups, pickguard, volume and tone knobs, strap posts, and output jack. They are typically made of Alder and have a great affect on tone.

Pickups

Pickups are what "pick up" the sound of the played strings and sends them out to the amp.

Pickups

The Bridge

The bridge saddles the strings to the body. They can be adjusted to help with overall bass tuning and string height.

Bridge

The Pickguard

The pickguard protects the wooden body from picks scratching and ruining the paint

Tone and volume knobs

Tone and volume knobs control the output volume of the bass and the tone it produces. On some basses, there are different tone knobs for each pickup. They can even be used to turn a pickup off completely.

The Neck

Neck

  • The Neck consists of the strings and fretboard
  • To play notes, bass players press the string against the frets, the metal bars that run along the fretboard, and pluck the string

The Headstock

Headstock

  • Contains the nut, tuners, and string guide
  • The nut is the inlay that strings run through
  • Tuners are the knobs that are used to tune each string
  • String guides hold strings down and guide them to their proper hole on the nut
