Molybdochalkos
(Cu,35.2Pb)
Description
History
Fun Fact
- signs as early as 10th century Greece by some alchemists including Zosimus
The microstructure of molybdochalkos is basically just copper with lead particles filling in empty spces in the copper structure.
- there are two basic types, high lead and low lead, or free machining alloys
- they consist of at least lead and copper
- free machining acts as chip breaker and lubricant, making alloys easier to machine
- high lead alloys are normally used in bearing applications; lead acts as solid lubricant, and copper is load bearing support, or weight-bearing part
- the color depends on the alloy composition
- the one in the picture's nominal composition is shown under the name at the top

Uses
Purpose
Either a high leaded copper or a low leaded copper, also called free machining, is made
Size of lead particles depend on the concentration of lead in the alloy
Liquid lead is added to liquid copper, and is left to dry
The copper solidifies first, making the lead solidify last and leaving lead particles to basically flow into the crevices of the solidified copper
- it can be used for certain parts of bullets, or other miscellaneous items such as metal pipes, water hose connectors, or clips
- these alloys can be used for bullets, or other miscellaneous items
