My goal is to create at least one thematic unit this year based on one social studies standard. A thematic unit will support scholars in being submerged into a social studies theme for the unit. Using the body-brain compatibility method will better serve students who may have challenges with the traditional method of teaching.
Informative comprehension test about the physics of bicycles
Student 1 scored 20%
Student 2 scored 60%
Student 3 sccored 30%.
After teaching more about the science concepts, I had scholars retake the test.
Student 1 went from 20% to 70%
Student 2 went from 60% to 50%.
Student 3 went from 30% to 60%
I started with the Thematic Unit in mind and applied it. Students experienced some success, however it was too much planning to do on my own. My mentor and I realized we needed to switch plans.
Based on the first action research cycle, it takes a long time to create a thematic unit. However, I will be receiving training on it next year and believe it will go well.
The goal this last semester was to implement Cognitive Content Dictionary (CCD) which is a GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) strategy. This strategy can be implemented in various subjects to strengthen the academic language. GLAD strategies are catered to English Language Learners and our school has a very high percentage of EL students (54%).
Results of Science test in Minerals, slow, and fast changes:
Student 1: 91%
Student 2: 87%
Student 3: 87%
Through planning a thematic unit, I realized how much work it takes. I learned that I am going to need to utilize my after school planning time well in order to be able to succeed in thematic planning. It is going to take a lot of work, but it clearly helped students. In addition, our school will be receiving training on creating thematic units.
How did you use data from student
assessments and student work to inform instructional decisions as related to your Action Research Cycles?
The information I used was mostly based throught meetings and conversations with my mentor. We reflected on the data and saw that students benefitted from the thematic unit, however, that changes had to be made.
Though I received a lot of professional development over the school year, I did not receive any training on thematic units. Next year we will have much more training on thematic curriculum planning. We will also be having GLAD training; which will help me implement strategies such as CCD. However, I did spend a great deal of time with my mentor learning how to create, plan, implement, and self-assess strategies like the CCD.
