Music Artists

Major Music Labels

In order to protect the music industry from repeating the losses seen in the 2000's, the 360 Deal was born

You feel there is a loss of control over their music under a 360

Labels want to get a percentage of ALL artist earnings and not just album sales

Creative Control

If an artist signs a 360 Deal, there is a very good chance that it will be less than favorable...at first

Digital Media

$$$$

Leverage

More money can equal more help

Simply put, you are a highly creative person and creativity isn't something you can turn on and off like a faucet. Under a 360 a label can have more control over the who, what, where, when, and why of an album sometimes stifling the your creative juices in the process...however this isn't the norm and there are options

Under the 360 Deal, Labels are now required to not only help finance a project for an artist, but also help with promotion, management, staffing, and touring.

The boom of the internet changed the way consumers purchased music. Rather than buy entire albums, buyers simply downloaded the songs they liked from Amazon, iTunes, etc. Or even worse, pirated the material from P2P, torrents, etc.

Major labels lost almost $5 billion annually due to slumping record sales in the 2000 decade. In fact 2001 end of year sales: $12.9 billion -> 2010 end of year sales: $3.4 billion.

The key to doing a "180 on a 360 Deal" is patience. You'll more than likely sign better deals once you have had some commercial success...which is a lot easier to get if you have a major label backing you up.

Responsibility

$$$$

These responsibilities put a lot of pressure on the label to ensure they return a profit on an artist. Where these duties used to be on the artist to fulfill, the label now has many roles in an artist's career...rather than just being the bank.

Yes, you have to give up a lot of rights and money, however you have a right to more help. You can demand more since a label is required to help more with your career
