Author's Purpose: Easy as Pie

Michelle Thomson

EDIM508

This presentation is designed to introduce first grade students to the three main purposes that authors have for writing using the mnemonic "PIE". The ultimate goal would be to have them identify these purposes in their own reading, and media viewing, and apply these purposes to their own writing throughout the year.

This lesson is designed to be used whole group so that the teacher can scaffold reading, and so that additional discussion can take place. There is an independent practice section at the end that could be done at a learning center. The class can extend the learning by creating a list or collection of work that showcases each purpose. Students can create a portfolio of their own writing pieces that represents each of the purposes.

PA State Standards:

1.1.1.A: Identify the author’s purpose and type, using grade level text.

1.9.1.A: Use media and technology resources for directed learning activities.

What is author's purpose?

An author's purpose is the reason he or she is writing.

Authors have three main reasons they write.
