  • The Ghana Empire began in 300 AD. Ghana was located south of the Sahara desert and north of the Niger river. In the tran-Saharan trade routes, African Societies in Sahal needed access to the markets of the Mediterranean Sea. Once these routes grew more popular, more people started to know a certain area, that we all know today as Ghana.

In 992 AD Ghana captures Aoudaghost (former Berber town in the southwest Sahara that ran along the trans-Saharan trade routes) The town was primarily the center of where North African traders could buy gold from the kings of ancient Ghana

In 1042 AD King Bassi takes the throne. King Bassi was a leader during the Ghana Empire during the time of conquest by the Almoravids. The Almoravids had grown in power while seeking Sahara trade routes, but soon thereafter the city and the empire finally fell in 1076 - the capital ended the Ghana empire, converting many people to Islam.

The Peak Of all Peaks

Ghana becomes founded

In 800 AD Ghana was officially founded. After being officially founded -overtime Ghana started to get more and more popular. It became the it place to be.

In 1000 AD Ghana was at its peak, every little thing, had its highest moments around this time. Ghana was chiefly bartering gold, ivory, and slaves for salt from Arabs and horses, cloth, swords, and books from North Africans and Europeans.

In 1200 AD the kingdom of Ghana was marking the end of its days. One reason Ghana fell from power, was after the attacks, when Ghana was still recovering, a drought came upon them and forced people to move out of the empire to find more food and water. Another reason was that trade declined after the gold mining decreased, so there was no income coming in. One of the last reasons were environmental issues, such as droughts - the animals were starving from the drought. So food sources dwindled.
