MY

FLIPPED

CLASSROOM

Where it started...

  • Students learning at different paces (slow, medium, fast)

  • Students missing important pieces of information from class even though they were "present"

  • Students absent (sick, sports, etc) and missing critical lessons

  • Students not completing homework fully or correctly at home because they "forgot" how to do it from class (or simply copying from a friend)
  • Teacher spending most of class time going over problems and not giving students a lot of time to practice on their own with support

  • Teacher spending many extra hours tutoring and re-explaining to students who didn't "get it" in class

Responsibility for learning flipped from teacher’s hands to students’ hands

Face to face time flipped from teacher-focused to student-focused

Focus of class time flipped from lower-order to higher-order thinking

Low-level Bloom's: Outside of class

(via video, podcast, article, website, etc)

High-level Bloom's: During class time

(with teacher & peer discussion and support)

What "flipping"

enables me to do

But the flipped classroom is really about what it enables to the students to do...

What "flipping" enables my students to do

Students can pause, rewind and re-watch lessons, truly learning at their own pace

Students can access the content for their class anytime, anywhere, on any device!

Students receive instant feedback and teachers can spend more time helping students and explaining difficult concepts

"I remember when I used to do homework at home and I was stuck on a problem, I had nobody to help me, but now my teacher is here when I need her."

What do students

now do at home?

"WSQ"

"Watch - Summarize - Question"

WATCH video

  • 5-15 minutes long
  • take notes & copy examples in SSS packets
  • Pause, rewind, fast forward as needed

See sample videos and SSS packets at kirchmathanalysis.blogspot.com

SUMMARIZE lesson

  • Open summary - write 5-8+ sentences about main points of lesson
  • Guided summary - answer "guiding" questions in complete sentences

ask a QUESTION

  • one they DON'T KNOW and need help answering
  • one they DO KNOW and can challenge their classmates with the next day.
  • Students are challenged to ask a "HOT" questions and are given question starters.

Flip your instruction so that students watch and listen to your lectures… for homework, and then use your precious class-time for what previously, often, was done in homework: tackling difficult problems, working in groups, researching, collaborating, crafting and creating. Classrooms become laboratories or studios, and yet content delivery is preserved.

What do students

now do in class?

  • Review WSQs as a whole class or in small group
  • Talk about important parts of the concept based on their summaries
  • Ask each other their questions
  • Discuss answers to questions in small groups
  • Compare answers to "Secret Questions"
  • Work on practice problems as a group
  • Take Concept Quizzes to prove their understanding of the concept
  • Create own problems and record solutions on video
  • Work on activities or projects related to lesson

  • Ask me or their peers for help whenever they are stuck
  • Re-watch lesson videos

Every student is

Thinking

Writing

Interacting

Reading

Listening

Speaking

every day!

Final thoughts on "the flip"

Bottom line: It’s not always the right instructional choice, it’s only one tool in our "toolbox". But it can be a powerful one.

Remember that the flipped classroom is about increasing the 1:1 time with the students.

"What's the best use of your 'face to face' time with your students?"

Students need to be transitioned. This is a change for them and change is not always easy

Don't look at the Flipped Classroom as a way to get more material covered. Yes, you will have more time so you could "fit" in more topics, but it would be better if you covered things more in depth.

"Flipping" can work in any subject area

and any grade level

Using this ideology has the ultimate goal of increasing student understanding and ownership of the content.

You do not have to fully flip your classroom to receive the benefits of "time-shift" in instruction

There is no ONE flipped classroom. Take pieces of everything you see and make it work with your students in your classroom.

You can be a good teacher and never use technology, and technology won’t turn a bad teacher into a good one. However, a good teacher who uses technology well can make great things happen! - Rushton Hurley
