Bi-Literacy

Is when a classroom is teaches a child to read and write in both English and the native language

Definition 2 & 3

  • A child who can read and write completely in two different languages

(Arnstrong, L. (2019, April 16). What Is Biliteracy? Retrieved September 14, 2020, from https://www.hameraypublishing.com/pages/what-is-biliteracy)

  • Is the comprehension and ability to both read and write in two languages. It is important to understand the methods used at home to effectively teach a child to be literate in their second language

Reyes, I. (2006). Exploring connections between emergent biliteracy and bilingualism. Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, 6(3), 267-292. doi:10.1177/1468798406069801

Reflection

For an ELL to be successful in a classroom they must be able to fully understand the material that is being taught. Which means it is very important that they are able to read and write in English and their native language. Biliteracy will affect us as teachers in many ways. We have to be aware that not every student will be as proficient as their neighbor. It may take a child longer to grasp a concept if they are understanding what we are saying but struggling to write it out themselves, especially if a child is a visual learner. This term can be related to both TEKS and ELPS because for a teacher the effectiveness asses and provide assignments they need to know where a child stand in their literacy levels. Knowing how proficient a child is in both languages will better allow you to create lessons.

Types of Bilingual Students

Definition 2 & 3

  • Early Bilingualism- has learned both languages from a young age
  • Late Bilingualism- When the second language is learned after the age of 6
  • Additive Bilingualism- When the second language increases and the first one decreases
  • Passive Bilingualism- When they can understand second language but can't speak it.

There are four types:

  • Balanced Bilingual
  • Monolingual/Literate in native language
  • Monolingual/preliterate in native language
  • Limited Bilingual

Bi-Culturally

Reflection

Having different types of ELLs is important so that way they aren't all categorized into one group. All kids learn at different rates so it's important to have students grouped together by ability. This allows them to be able to work together more efficiently and allows you to get more information across. By having different types it can allow you to better understand your TEKS and help them with their English proficiency

Díaz-Rico, L. T. (2013). Strategies for teaching English learners (p. 309). Boston: Pearson.

  • Teaching with a vast and inimate understanding of the different cultures in a classroom
  • Being aware of the different norms and patterns of a native culture and using that knowledge to effectively teach

Definition 2 & 3

  • In addition to having different cultures within a classroom there could also be opposing cultures within a child's home from having immigrant families. A teacher must take both the classroom culture and the students home culture into consideration

(Cordova, D., Ciofu, A., & Cervantes, R. (2014). Exploring Culturally Based Intrafamilial Stressors among Latino Adolescents. Family relations, 63(5), 693-706. doi:10.1111/fare.12095)

  • It is taking the time to ask questions so that way our students feel respected. It making sure your students feel proud of where they come from and helping them be confident in themselves

(How One Teacher's 'Bicultural' Approach to Dual Language Education Instills Cultural Pride in Her Scholars. (2019, May 06). Retrieved September 14, 2020, from http://blog.democracyprep.org/how-one-teachers-bicultural-approach-to-dual-language-education-instills-cultural-pride-in-her-scholars/)

(Diaz-Rico Lynne T.. Strategies for Teaching English Learners (2-downloads) (p. 265). Pearson Education. Kindle Edition.)

Reflection

This concept is vital to teaching ELLs because it helps them feel confident, and if you are the one boosting that confidence it is also going to build the trust between you and a child's family. As a teacher I will have to take the take to embrace everyone single one of y students and their backgrounds. This is especially important for using TEKS. You can't assess a kid on their full ability unless you've taken the time to connect their family and see their culture. You'll never build a child to their full potential unless you have a complete understanding of who they are.

Dual-Language Programs

Definition 2 & 3

  • They are considered "additive" because they add a second a language while maintaining literacy of their native language.

(PackZia View all posts by Angela PackZia →, A. (2015, May 02). Dual Language Programs Explained. Retrieved September 11, 2020, from https://austin.thinkbilingual.org/dual-language-programs-explained)

  • Allows a student to build a second language well developing their first language and is beneficial in teaching because they are going over the content multiple times in both languages

Murphy, Audrey Figueroa. Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin. 2016, Vol. 82 Issue 4, p1-15. 15p.

-Is a program that continues to develop a child's primary language, while they learn a second language.

-It also teaches content it both languages and helps boost self esteem

Reflection

These programs are important to ELLs because it allows them to continue to develop their first language while adapting and growing into their school culture by learning a second language. As an educator I will have to be aware of my students abilities and recognize that my ELLs may need extra time and support in class. These programs help students with their language skills which in turn can help with their English proficiency and understanding of classroom learning objectives.

Language Transfer

Definition 2 & 3

  • Is when an ELLs transfers the phonology, syntax, and semantics of their first language into the learning of their second language
  • Typically the competence a student has in their first language is the level of competence they will achieve in their second language

(APA Dictionary of Psychology. (2020). Retrieved September 11, 2020, from https://dictionary.apa.org/language-transfer)

Kim, Y. G., & Piper, B. (2018). Cross-language transfer of reading skills: An empirical investigation of bidirectionality and the influence of instructional environments. Reading & writing, 32(4), 839-871. doi:10.1007/s11145-018-9889-7

Is the way translation between two language occurs. There are content differences, alphabetical differences and so much more. It is why a lot of people that are native in spanish might switch back to it when talking in English because they may be struggling to find the correct word

Reflection

Transfer is important because it gives the ELLs the opportunity to communicate with a teacher or student it a way they might not have been if they were only speaking one language. It helps the student correct and perfect their second language skills while also utilizing their native language. As a teacher it helps me to strengthen my patience as I help a student to learn the proper wording and grammar of their second language. I can utilize TEKS and ELPS in my classroom to develop lesson plans that will help an ELL perfect their oral and literacy skills in both languages.
