A simple sentence has one independent clause (one subject and one verb). It can have adjectives and adverbs as well.

Complex sentences can be used to:

  • qualify
  • specify
  • explain

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause linked with a subordinating clause (because, since, after, although, when) or a relative pronoun (that, who, which).

Compound Sentence

A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses joined either with a coordinating conjunction or with a semicolon.
